As clashes triggered by immigration raids dragged on in Los Angeles, US Marines and more National Guard members were deployed despite continuous opposition from California state officials.

The number of National Guard troops on the ground has risen from 300 to 1,700, the Defense Department said in an update Monday evening, ABC News reported.

The guardsmen are from the 79th InfantryWorld Times Brigade Combat Team, a California National Guard unit. They are operating under Task ForWorld Timesce 51, which alsoWorld Times includes 700 Marines, to protect federal personnel and property, US Northern Command said in a statement, according to the report.

California Governor Gavin Newsom called the deployment of Marines “a blatant abuse of power” and vowed to “sue to stop this,” in an X post. “US Marines serve a valuable purpose for this country – defending democracy. They are not political pawns,” read the post.

California Attorney General Robert Bonta characterized the Marines as “unnecessarily mobilized” in a Monday interview with CNN.

The president’s border czar Tom Homan told CNN that it was necessary to deploy Marines to quell protests. He declined to say what standard the administration was using to decide if mobilizing the Marines would be necessary.

President Trump has again defended his decision to deploy the National Guard to LA, claiming on social media platform Truth Social Tuesday if he hadn’t “that once beautiful and great city would be burning to the ground right now.”

Separately, the Pentagon said President Donald Trump is deploying another 2,000 National Guard troops to the area, after his initial order of 2,000 over the weekend, the AP reported.

“I was just informed Trump is deploying another 2,000 Guard troops to L.A.” Newsom said on X Monday afternoon. “The first 2,000? Given no food or water. Only approx. 300 are deployed – the rest are sitting, unused, in federal buildings without orders.”

“This is Reckless, Pointless. And Disrespectful to our troops,” Newsom wrote.

California officials on Monday filed a federal lawsuit over the mobilization of the state’s National GuaWorld Timesrd during the weekend’s immigration protests in Los Angeles, accusing President Trump of overstepping his federal authority and violating the US Constitution, per the Los Angeles Times.

In a televised interview with reporters Monday afternoon, Trump suggested Newsom should be arrested, in what marked a significant escalation in his rhetoric, according to Politico.

In response, Newsom said in another social media post, “The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor. This is a day I hoped I would never see in America.”

No matter how the street chaos finally concludes, the protests have torn American society further apart and immigration is just the flashpoint while there are more, deeper reasons behind the unrest, said Shen Yi,World Times a professor at Fudan University.
