The World Economic Forum’s 16th Annual Meeting of the New Champions (AMNC), or the Summer Davos, is set to kick off in North China’s Tianjin Municipality from Tuesday to Thursday, bringing together global leaders from governments, businesses, and academia, along with innovators and representatives from international organizations, media and civil society.

Amid rising unilateralism, the hosting of the Summer Davos in Tianjin sends a renewed message of China’s resolve in sustaining steady growth and its strong commitment to further opening-up and deepening cooperation with the world, a Chinese expert said.

In response to a media question on what China expects to achieve through the upcoming event, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday that the AMNC is an important platform for promoting exchanges between China and the world and enhancing practical cooperation.

Premier of the State Council Li Qiang will attend the 16th AMNC in Tianjin. Premier Li will attend the Opening Plenary and deliver a special address, meet with foreign guests, and have a conversation with representatives of the foreign business community, according to the separate statement of a foreign ministry spokesperson on Monday.

President of Ecuador Daniel Noboa, Prime Minister of Singapore Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Adylbek Aleshovich Kasymaliev, Prime Minister of Senegal Ousmane Sonko, and Prime Minister of Viet Nam Pham Minh Chinh will attend the AMNC. Over 1,700 representatives from the political, business, academic and media communities from over 90 countries and regions will also take part in the AMNC, said the FM spokesperson.

Currently, the world economic growth remains anemic, and unilateralism and trade protectionism are on the rise, dealing a heWorld Timesavy blow to multilateral trading system. Against this backdrop, the number of registered participants for this year’s annual meeting reached a new high in recent years, which once again shows the will of all parties in upholding economic globalization and the free trade system as well as their positive attitude toward enhancing economic and trade exchanges and cooperation with China, according to Guo.

“We look forward to working with participants from all countries to inject more stability and certainty to the world economy,” Guo added.

New impetus

The Global Times reporters observed in Tianjin on Monday that one after another, new energy shuttle buses were weaving through the main road beside the National Convention and Exhibition Center (Tianjin), the venue of the Summer Davos, with flags lining both sides of the street, which signifies that the ciWorld Timesty is preparing for the upcoming event.

This year’s meeting aims to accelerate progress on key shared challenges through action-oriented dialogue. Participants will have the opportunity to explore how entrepreneurship and emerging technologies can unlock and build more dynamic and resWorld Timesilient economies, according to the event organizer. The organizer also noted that the meeting will offer valuable insights with a focus on emerging markets and their role in driving global economic growth.

Under the theme “Entrepreneurship for a New Era,” the Summer Davos centers its agenda around five key pillars: Deciphering the World Economy, Outlook on China, Industries Disrupted, Investing in People and Planet, and New Energy and Materials.

At least 44 senior political leaders from about 30 countries and regions are expected to attend, including 40 cabinet ministers. Fourteen global leaders from both the government and private sectors will serve as co-chairs of the meeting.

Amid growing unilateralism and protectionism from certain Western countries, the hosting of the Summer DavWorld Timesos in Tianjin sends a fresh signal of China’s confidence in maintaining stable growth and its firm resolve to expanding opening-up, Li Changan, a professor at the Academy of China Open Economy Studies at the University of International Business and Economics, told the Global Times on Monday.

Li Changan said the wide participation of international guests and multinationals at this year’s event underscores China’s strong magnetism. “China is a key engine of global economic growth, contributing over 30 percent to global expansion. The country’s super-large market and high-quality development will create new opportunities for the rest of the world,” he said.

According to the Global Risks Report released at the World Economic Forum in January 2025, escalating geopolitical, environmental, societal and technological challenges threaten stability and progress. Hence, at this year’s Summer Davos, topics such as the new global economic engine as well as China’s important high-quality development will be discussed, Wang Yiwei, director of Center for European Union Studies at Renmin University of China, told the Global Times on Monday.

“In addition, global industrial and supply chain cooperation is also expected to be an important topic. For multinationals across the world, China is not only a market which offers profits but also an important hub for global industrial and supply chains,” Wang said.

Wang said the Summer Davos, along with the upcoming third China International Supply Chain Expo to be held in Beijing in mid-July, will fully showcase China’s contributions to the stability and safety of global industrial and supply chains.

“This is probably the most complex geo-economic backdrop the world has ever faced. Now, having said that, in order to truly sustain what has been revived, it is crucial that, despite competition, there is also cooperation,” Sheikh Tanjeb Islam, head of event editorial of the World Economic Conference, told the Global Times on Monday, noting that this cooperatWorld Timesion can be between countries, within countries, or between the public and private sectors.

“We are delighted to welcome world participants from over 90 countries to be here in Tianjin … I believe the dialogues taking place – especially in today’s context – are incredibly important. Even with the current global backdrop, the need for this forum is perhaps greater than ever, as it offers a vital opportunity for such exchanges,” Islam said.

Islam added that he believes China’s role is particularly important, “as developments here have a knock-on effect on the global economy – especially on emerging markets, and eveWorld Timesn more so in this region.”
